about

“Don’t Know the Words” is a peppy, adventurous jam with lively, vintage grooves that will make you want to stop what you’re doing and dance as hard as you can. The song literally pokes fun at the fact that I’m not the best at remembering lyrics, but also serves as a metaphor for having no idea what you’re doing in life. In the choruses, I reference two of my musical heroes, Elton John and John Lennon, and their creative counterparts, Bernie Taupin and Paul McCartney. You can hear the envy I have for these powerhouse duos in the chorus lyrics: “I just make it all up as I go along / Sort of like Elton John minus Bernie / I need somebody.” One of the highlights for me is when the middle of the tune bursts into a fuzzy, harmonized duet between the synth and electric guitar.

lyrics

I turn on the radio
I can’t tell you how it goes
Only people like my sister know the lyrics
Know the lyrics
That’s not me

I live in stereo
Your boy never had a flow
Never listen to what everybody
Everybody else is hearing

Can’t tell what’s comin’ next and I
Feel a little lost
I always get distracted by
The music

No, I don’t know the words to my own song
I always get ‘em wrong
It’s so embarrassing
Yeah, I just make it all up as I go along
Sort of like Elton John minus Bernie
I need somebody

I need somebody

The moment I nail it down
It gets twisted all around
Try to bring it back to basics
Back to anything that I can comprehend

There are so many voices now
That threaten to drown me out
Will I ever get to singin’
Get to sing and will I make it to the end?

Can’t tell what’s comin’ next and I
Feel a little lost
I always get distracted by
The music

No, I don’t know the words to my own song
I always get ‘em wrong
It’s so embarrassing
Yeah, I just need somebody to come along
Sort of like Paul and John
You be my Cartney
Oh, and I’ll be Johnny

Yeah, I’ll be Johnny

Oh no, I don’t know the words to my own song
I always get ‘em wrong
It’s so embarrassing
Yeah, I just make it all up as I go along
Sort of like Elton John minus Bernie
I need somebody
